Before digging anywhere in Florida, notify Sunshine 811 and wait for buried utilities to be marked. The marks come as paint and flags in standard colors.
The rules
- Notice at least 2 full business days before digging, or 10 for work beneath state waters (F.S. 556.105).
- Utilities mark within 2 full business days, to within 24 inches of either side of the line, using the APWA color code.
- Ticket information is valid for 30 calendar days.
Your part
Call 811 or (800) 432-4770, or file a single-address ticket online. Sunshine 811 suggests outlining a small dig area in white paint or flags, the APWA color for proposed excavation.
The homeowner exemption
F.S. 556.108 lets owners skip the ticket only for digging no deeper than 10 inches on their own single-family lot, carefully, and off any utility easement. Trenches, pools and stump removal go deeper.
